Stiffer Penalties Result
from New Dogfighting Legislation Now Signed into Law
(reprinted courtesy of Best Friends News

by
Michael Rinker
Saying that dog fighting
is “an activity we will not tolerate here in Georgia,” Gov.
Sonny Perdue signed into law a bill Best Friends helped engineer
that provides tougher penalties for individuals involved in dog
fighting, including spectators.
State Sen. Chip Rogers,
who had pushed for the legislation since 2004, was at the
signing ceremony on May 6.
“I would like to take
this opportunity to thank Best Friends Animal Society for all
their work behind the scenes when we were first crafting this
legislation,” Rogers said. “Without the help of Best Friends,
our task of taking this legislation from a bill to the
governor’s desk would have been much more difficult.”
Georgia’s previous
dog-fighting law was among the worst in the country.

Update on Abe

Susan, one of our volunteers, writes:
This is Abe, one of three puppies (along with Maude
and Lexi) that GHHS rescued in Grantville, and his Mom ,
Keri. They came to visit and show us how beautiful
he's
become.
I'm the proud grandmother now!!!!!!!!
(Susan fostered all three puppies until GHHS found them
their forever homes. If you're interested in fostering dogs
or cats and can help us find forever homes for every one of
the deserving abandoned and abused companion animals we
rescue, please call us at 770-830-2820, or go to
gaheartland1@yahoo.com. You will be so glad you did.)

Mission Statement
Georgia Heartland Humane Society was founded in 1996 based on
the concept that "All life is sacred" and that companion animals
have a right to a pain free and peaceful existence.
Dedicated to this theory, Georgia Heartland strives to end the
suffering of companion animals in our community by rescuing
abused, abandoned, and unwanted animals and giving them the
chance to find loving and permanent homes of their own.

Another
Happy Tale:
Bella...

has fit in PERFECTLY (Noel, her new mom
writes us) - including "kissy face" wrestling with Jake
(Bella's new brother, a senior black Sharpei). They have
become very good friends. He instantly licked her - and of course a
thorough nose inspection from both sides. She is a VERY fast
learner - and remembers commands so well. She
LOVES her food - LOVES her basket - LOVES her red ball - and as of
this morning - she had taken complete inventory of all NEW AND FIRST
TOYS - and files them clearly in her basket. Jake is cool with that
- he shared his Ny-la-Bone with her. I believe they may have cuddled
together last night .... no peeps - everyone slept right through the
night
